Specialising in local pop-up market stalls, Grin & Bear Kitchen is a family-run business centred around a love for Welsh food. With an emphasis on utilising organic, vegan-friendly ingredients and home made recipes, Grin & Bear Kitchen were looking to develop a visual identity that reflected the authenticity of their products. To reflect this, the Grin & Bear Kitchen visual identity is centred around the use of hand-drawn typography and charming illustrations.
The name itself originates from an attitude towards life, a tendency to ‘grin and bear’ the hardships life can throw at us. In a humorous twist, the Grin & Bear Kitchen brand is built upon the idea of literally depicting a grinning bear as the brand mascot, bringing warmth and humour to the packaging and taking centre stage in the brand’s primary visual mark.
As a small business, Grin & Bear Kitchen focus on a small range of products that they sell at local farmers markets. The business was looking to get a set of unique packaging designs for their Welsh Cakes and Jam that could fit their budget, while maintaining a unique look. Borrowing from the wealth of patterns that originate from traditional Welsh crafts, the packaging design is peppered with unique, hand drawn design details. Paired with a stripped back, mono-tone colour scheme reminiscent of East Asian packaging design, the combined effect is engaging and full of character.
